Canadian medical marijuana is legal in Canada with the prescription from a doctor. Health Canada has stated “Dried marijuana is not an approved drug or medicine in Canada. The government of Canada does not endorse the use of marijuana, but the courts have required reasonable access to a legal source of marijuana when authorized by a physician.” meaning marijuana is still illegal in Canada, yet if you possess an Access to Possess card that proves that you have been prescribed marijuana as a medicinal source of relief you are legally allowed to be in possession of marijuana. Health Canada (HC) has created the Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulations (MMPR) as a way to create conditions for a commercial industry. The Canadian medical marijuana industry is responsible for the production and distribution of marijuana. The regulations created by HC provide access to quality controlled dried Canadian medical marijuana and produced under secure and sanitary conditions.
Currently there are eighteen (19) approved licensed producers that grow Canadian medical marijuana and sell
directly to patients, and seven (7) licensed producers who are authorized to produce marijuana but are not authorized to sell to the public. These companies are only approved to produce dried marijuana, and do not sell resins, oils, extractions, or edible marijuana products. Health Canada also hasn’t decided to pick proper spelling of the plant, is it mari-h-uana or mari-j-uana 🙂 I still use marijuana. When you receive your MMPR authorization you buy directly from your producer of choice, either by phone or internet. Health Canada conducts routine inspections of all Canadian medical marijuana producers to verify their ongoing compliance with the regulations. Health Canada has various tools of enforcement available, from warning letters and seizures to license suspension, revocation and prosecution.
