Rehabilitation Services and Vocational Assistance Program
Currently the Rehabilitation Services and Vocational Assistance Program is designed to help Canadian Veterans develop skills to increase your independence and help you adjust to your situation. The program provides funding for services needed, and not otherwise available, to help you adjust to life at home, in your community, or at your work.
The Rehabilitation Services and Vocational Assistance Program is an amazing service/program as VAC will cover medical and psycho-social rehabilitation. Medical rehabilitation helps you restore your physical and psychological functioning to the extent possible. Where as the psycho-social rehabilitation helps you develop skills to support independence and adjust to living with your health problem or disability.
Some examples of Medical and Psycho-social on the Rehabilitation Services and Vocational Assistance Program are:
- Pain Management
- Psychiatric or Psychological Treatment
- Addictions Counselling
- Occupational Therapy
One of the greatest aspects of the Rehabilitation Services and Vocational Assistance Program is that VAC will cover your vocational rehabilitation. Which means that you have the option to go to school for up to 4 years and VAC will cover the cost and get you on earnings loss benefit.
The Earnings Loss Benefit is a taxable, monthly benefit that ensures your total income will be at least 75% of your gross pre-release military salary. This income replacement provides 75% of your gross pre-release military salary while you are participating in Rehabilitation services. This ensures a pre-tax income of at least $42,426 per year.
Not only will you get Earning Loss Benefit on the Rehabilitation Services and Vocational Assistance Program you will also receive benefits to cover the cost of:
- Transportation (Private, Taxi, or Other)
- Additional Dependent Care
- Required Books
- Internet Fee’s
- Basic Safety and Specialized Clothing
- Transportation for School
- Cost of Parking
- Temporary Accommodations and Transport To/From
- Additional Dependent Care
- Computers and Peripheral Equipment, and
These needs are approved on a needs-basis and must be pre-approved by your VAC case manager and also be part of your rehabilitation plan. So it is best to know these benefits now before you write up your plan with your worker so you take full benefit of the program as a way to help you.
These benefits are covered while you are enrolled in school/the Rehabilitation Services and Vocational Assistance Program. You will receive a package that outlines how to take advantage of these benefits and how to claim them with the Rehabilitation Services and Vocational Assistance Program provider.
You must submit your request for reimbursement for all Rehabilitation Services and Vocational Assistance Program services and expenses within 12 months of the date of the service or other approved expense.
