Different Methods of Decarboxylation

Different Methods of DecarboxylationToday you will be learning about the different methods of decarboxylation.

Cannabis decarboxylation, often referred to as “Decarb”, is a chemical reaction that removes a carboxyl group and releases carbon dioxide (CO2). Usually, decarboxylation refers to a reaction of carboxylic acids, removing a carbon atom from a carbon chain. The single most important step when cooking with cannabis. Learn decarboxylation and not be nervous about putting your cannabis in the oven!

In cannabis, when the THC-a acid is heated a chemical reaction activates the THC-a compounds and converts them to THC.  THC is the main psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis. Decarboxylation is the most important step when cooking with cannabis.   You want activated THC to be infused into your mediums.

Times and temperatures of decarb will vary from person to person but the industry standard for decarb is 240F for 45-60 minutes.  Decarb can be achieved at different times and temperatures, 240F for 45 minutes is similar to 200F for 1.5 hours.  See

Different Methods of Decarboxylation

There is multiple way to achieve decarboxylation and we will look at 4 different methods of decarboxylation.  The 4 methods are the Mason Jar, the Magical Butter DecarBox, Sheet Pan, and Sous Vide.

  • Mason Jar:  The mason jar is perfect for keeping the smells down.  All you simply need to do is add the cannabis to the mason jar and place in a 240F oven for 40-60+ minutes.
  • Magical Butter DecarBox: This is a great little piece of equipment for decarb.  The silicon box helps protect your cannabis from the harsh elements of the oven.  The added thermometer helps with temperature regulation within the box.
  • Sheet Pan: The tried and true method of decarboxylation.  All you need is a sheet pan and some tin foil and you’re ready to get started.  This is one of the earliest methods of decarb.  You add your cannabis to the pan and top it with tin foil and place in the oven for your desired time.
  • Sous Vide: One of the newest methods of decarb.  This is a great way to preserve your flavors of the cannabis during decarb.  Since the cannabis is vacuum sealed and decarbed at a lower temperature, you preserve the terpenes.  Sous Vide regulates the temperature of the water never allowing it to reach above that temperature.  Making it great for decarb.
